Red Wine on the Carpet in Livermore Wine Country: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

We are in wine country, so we see a lot of this

Livermore Valley has more than 50 wineries, and most of the wine comes home. So does some of it onto the carpet. The good news is that red wine is a tannin stain, and tannin responds well to the right treatment. The bad news is that most of what people do in the first 10 minutes makes it worse.

The first 10 minutes

1. Blot with a dry white towel. White so you can see the transfer. Press, lift, move to a clean part of the towel. Never rub.
2. Pour a small amount of cool water on the spot to dilute what is left. Blot again.
3. Repeat until the towel stops picking up color.
4. Put a dry towel over the spot with something heavy on it and leave it overnight.

What not to do

• No hot water. Heat sets tannin.
• No salt. It draws moisture but leaves residue and often locks the color in.
• No white wine trick. It just dilutes. Cool water does the same without adding sugar.
• No store foam. Many leave a sticky residue that attracts dirt and makes professional treatment harder.

When to call us

If the stain has dried for more than a day, or if it is on light carpet, blotting will only go so far. A professional pre-treatment plus hot water extraction takes out most wine stains, even old ones. Fresh stains come out during a normal room cleaning. Set-in stains may need a spot treatment, and we tell you at the door before doing anything.
