Every trip from the front door to the kitchen, the garage to the bedrooms, or downstairs to upstairs crosses the same 3-foot-wide strip. Grit on shoes and socks lands in that strip and gets ground into the base of the fibers with each step. It cuts the fibers and dulls them. That is the gray you see. It is dirt and micro-damage, not fading.
